This past week in class was a very good one for me; I still absolutely love my inquiry group and am continuing to learn a great deal on the decision to drop the bomb on Hiroshima.
The main things I learned about the decision this week was the importance of the Potsdam conference which was the conference where the three nations decided to bomb Hiroshima. Another key point is that that in Truman’s diary he states ““The target will be purely a military one and we will issue a warning statement asking the Japs to surrender and save lives. I’m sure they will not do that, but we will have given them the chance. It is certainly a good thing for the world that Hitler’s crowd or Stalin’s did not discover this atomic bomb. It seems to be the most terrible thing ever discovered, but it can be made the most useful.”(56) This to me is just ridiculous, when you drop a bomb you can’t just decide who you want to be killed.
I also learned about the test bomb that was used in a New Mexican desert. Through this I was able to realise that they knew the effects of the bomb therefore I’m starting to question how they ever thought they could pick their targets.
I think I’m starting to believe that maybe the bomb was used only due to the fact that the US wanted an active target to test an atomic bomb on. In all honesty my thoughts are all in a jumble and I’m not really sure what I believe yet. What I do know is that I’m very excited to move on and have things come together.
